How to Replace an audi keyless entry G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

The good news is that they are very affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at an Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.
